With every question I asked, it was very easy to see how different my grandmother and I were and are from each other. For example, when she was my age, she was already pregnant with her first child and had only gone until sixth grade in school. Compared to me, attending the University of Texas at Austin, pursuing a degree in neuroscience, living far away from home, it was almost night and day. Although we live very different lives, there are also several similarities between us. We value many of the same things—family and hard work. Although I haven’t had to work my entire life, pursuing a degree at a highly ranked university is considered something taboo in my family. Meaning, not many people have pursued past a high school education.[8]
